This is a great example of what "story telling" can do to transform dry numbers and statistics into something that keeps the attention of your audience high and inspires them.

I wanted to see ecological population graphs. Like Biomass totals of wild mammals, fisheries, insects, elephants in the Sarangeti. The status of food webs. For me that's the part that humans whether they know it or not, are tied to our natural world. Without a healthy natural world, you will not have a healthy human world. Just as example, in my life alone, co2 ppm has only ever gone up at an increasing rate, from about 340ppm co2 to 420ppm co2 in my life alone.
Cuz if these rivers dry out and destroy our breadbasket regions, we are collectively fucked to the tune of several billion people. And there aint 1800s era hunting grounds if we wanna go live in the woods either.

@John La Marca Well, data means information. Kindness is pretty much what you can offer your fellow human being. There will always be humans driven by more selfish agendas, who cares? Be kind - not for their sake but for your own. Being kind is a treasure all unto itself.

It's called Reciprocal Human Social Altruism. It is the secret of our success because it makes us feel 'happy' by pumping us with feelgood hormones like the Endorphins..
It is our true 'Human Nature'.

yes, its better to be kind than to be clever , or rich, or famous , or good looking ....anybody can practice kindness regardless of how wealthy or poor you are...if you want to change the world for the better., do this....be kind to everyone you meet and everyone you know.

lol, nice sentiment , and I agree with your statement, but in my experience people like this are not only, not welcomed in this world, but ostracized. People don't want to accept someone is smarter, or more moral or happier. They especially will not accept someone being happier if the person they are judging has less wealth and/or achievements. The self righteousness is so ingrained.
The basic attitudes I see, in friends, family, acquaintances, service reps, strangers is, "You don't want anything different than what I have, you are just bitter because you are not as good or smart as me. Even if one is not bitter, or has no complaints, they learn to look down at others, because if they had the person's life they would consider themselves losers, or not smart enough. Even if it's someone who has lived their life volunteering to help sick children. They are put in a position to have to accept either they are not a good person, or that their ideas are not the only way to design success or intelligence. A successful person won't do that. Also, I don't want to hurt anyone, so anything I do is ok. And communicating means not speaking your real opinion, not speaking more than 1 or 2 sentences(like this comment. Long comments regularly get me insults. Info has to be short, packaged and deliverable, or it's not valid.), not knowing something that someone else doesn't, or knowing a better way to do something they are doing. Not talking animated or with passion, cz that means you want attention, or love or own voice. The truth is they are insecure, fearful, petty, brainless drones, boring and spiritually lost, in a void of meaning and purpose. They are threatened by anyone that knows how to really smile, and is free of their ego, hypocrisy and judging others.Truth is it's easier to be quiet, and selfish, to make assumptions and feed their own fantastical narrative.
I truly believe humans are naturally more like Hans then not, but 95% of the population suffers from mental disorders that culture has created in them. The culture of outdoing the next guy, being cool, being loved and idolized. Honest, selfless, respectful, non-judgemental, supportive, consistent with advertised beliefs, sensitive to others suffering, smart, articulate.... These people are eaten alive in this world, and hypocrisy, wow. Do not make a change in your life for the purpose of trying to be a better person, and then explain your decision to someone who isn't willing to make the same change, they will burn a person at the stake before admit the logic is irrefutable, or they are doing something wrong. " What do you know? You think you are sooo smart." lol Losers, the people you are referring to, people who are not Hans Rosling, are losers, plain and simple.
      Peace
P.S. In Europe everyone talks like that. Go to Germany, they are so colorful and passionate. I know it sounds wrong, but they are so miserable because they are surrounded by emotional deciders, a.k.a.morons

I think that there is still a lot of lack in perspective. Generalizing people as if they were billions through averages and round chypers, this bad habit of talking in abstract ideas without suggesting how to approach to them, making emphasis on how it is solely people´s responsibility for their own growth... there is no solution to any of these problems in this video, it only tries to convince you that the world is not as unequal as we think it is and barely points the finger to the richest

    • François Badoux
      François Badoux سنوات قبل +1

@Orlando Miguel Alvarez Alfaro I don't agree with you. He did clearly say that it was up to the richer to do the effort and change. He also said how much a coal-fired power station could bring to Mozambique, despite the fact that he is clearly not for coal-generated power. That is a concrete proposal, is it not? Well, he couldn't foresee in 2014 that solar power was going to become cheaper than coal power, and could give power to these villages without even installing a grid.
He advocated bringing education and health to the villages, and then only could the villagers take their future in their own hands. That are concrete proposals, are they not?
I don't think you watched his presentation with much attention.

Watching Hans Rosling talks I learned that *time* is the missing element in most data analysis and statistical reports. The media and political campaign are even worse when supporting their agenda with statistics, since they only use a snapshot of data, stripping away the element of time.

@J D I I was very depressed and suicidal as a teenager, working two jobs and going to school, then I was off on my own and became homeless after losing my job and being robbed, for close to a year... I got so involved trying to survive and find a job, any kind of job I had no time for depression. I won't say walking around, hungry, soaking wet looking for shelter, late at night in a cold pounding rainstorm makes you cheerful, but I was not depressed about it. I would not beg for help or food, I was slowly starving, still too proud to beg. No food stamps or anything, I was a able bodied man. Good for losing weight. I steadily lost 10 pounds every month :) I learned happiness could be found in a lack of pain, and a comfortable shady place place to sit.
Depression was never a problem again.

    • Erling Schrøder
Erling Schrøder 2 سنوات قبل +1

He is wrong. The only environmental facet he touches in this presentation is climate change caused by human made emissions. Emissions are only one of many symptoms of our level of consumption, and therefore, by omitting the fact that all parts of nature are degrading rapidly, his talk is only for people to feel good. Also, the though that the population in a democracy would vote to reduce their standard of living to a sustainable level (extreme loss of materialistic wealth for everyone) is just ignorant. Every drastic, effective environmental policy will, in a democracy, be implemented to late. Or maybe not, its all up to us now.

This man was a prime example of living your dream. Why? Because. One must work to survive. And if you can find or create a job that gives you this much joy, well your truly truly truly blessed. People- especially you young ones here for a school assignment- PLEASE please please PLEASE put all of your effort into getting into a line if work that you truly love, and I mean ALL of your effort- do this while your young, because then the rest of your life can be spent in enjoyment, because your work which takes a great percentage of each days time will be spent in an enjoyable atmosphere which will allow your happiness so much more when your not at work. PLEASE DO NOT DO DRUGS- I was a successful WAAAAY smarter than average student and employee who thought I'd never ever touch hard drugs but here I am at 39 still hooked on heroin, because I didn't feel I could handle things when my dad died and million things on top of it. That was 20 years ago. Please, if your using you MUST stop now, after 20 years and 24 times in rehab and dozens of outpatient programs I still can't seem to quit. Don't let this become you please it's like living in hell on earth.
    Much love.

As an American baby boomer, I remember the horror of seeing news stories
of starving children in Bangladesh. We were taught ‘over population’ was a problem constantly back then. This presentation has had a profound effect on me. IT WORKED! The powers that be did exactly what they claimed needed to be done - they lowered the birth rate significantly. Birth control advances were a huge part of it also. I enjoyed seeing Dr. Rosling’s presentation very much. And I am happy to say, have done my part - I have three children & 5 grandchildren. You’re welcome!😜
